Senior Writer camie.young@gwinnettdailypost.com LAWRENCEVILLE - Engineers are designing the planned Sugarloaf Parkway extension as a limited-access road. Last week, commissioners approved a $678,424.54 addition to the design contract for the first phase of the extension for work needed on interchanges and bridges, Deputy Transportation Director Alan Chapman said. Many commissioners said their support of the project hinged on limiting the access. But Chapman said the original contract with Precision Planning had included at-grade intersections for the project, which would extend Sugarloaf from where it currently ends at Ga. Highway 20 south of Lawrenceville to Ga. Highway 316. A proposed second phase would continue the road north to Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, creating a loop around Lawrenceville. The design contract was adjusted to a total of $3,242,524.66, which will be paid with 2005 sales tax funds, according to county documents. Chapman said officials hope to have a construction contract on the first segment - Ga. 20 to New Hope Road - issued by the end of the year.More like this story
