Third suspect arrested in man's shooting death

BUFORD - Gwinnett police have arrested a third suspect in the February murder of a 19-year-old Dacula man.

Police believe Keith Orlando Owens Jr., 19, of Dacula took part in the shooting death of Jimmy Lee West on Feb. 5 in Buford. Owens was arrested and charged Tuesday with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, both felonies. He remains jailed at the Gwinnett County Detention Center without bond.

Investigators have determined that Owens participated in gunfire directed toward West, who was shot in a yard at 2891 Hill Circle in Buford.

Gwinnett County Police Department spokesman Cpl. Darren Moloney said the shooters' motive remains unclear, but West and his assailants were not strangers.

"This was not a random act of violence," Moloney said. "(The defendants) and the victim were well known to each other."

Marco Danyel Mcilwain, 18, and 19-year-old Joseph Andrew Smith, both of Dacula, were arrested in February and charged with murder.

Mcilwain and Smith pleaded not guilty to murder charges at a June 20 arraignment. Both suspects remain in jail, and a trial date has not been set, said Danny Porter, Gwinnett County district attorney.

West was a father of two and a former Dacula High student. He spent six days at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta before he died.

The investigation is ongoing, but Moloney said he doubts additional shooters will be arrested.

"At this point, it's more or less wrapped up," Moloney said. "But it's not done until the investigator turns in his final report."
