Apple to open store in Mall of Georgia

BUFORD - Apple Inc. will open a store at the Mall of Georgia sometime this fall, mall officials announced Tuesday.

This will be Apple's fourth store in Georgia. Two are located in Atlanta - one at Perimeter Mall and another at Lenox Square Mall - and one is located in Alpharetta at North Point Mall.

Apple has more than 170 stores worldwide.

The store will have 4,605 square feet of retail space and will be located on the upper level near Dick's Sporting Goods.

Construction has just begun on the store, and it could be open by early fall, said Melissa Cahill, director of marketing for the Mall of Georgia. Cahill could not specify an exact opening date Tuesday.

Cahill said bringing an Apple store to the mall has been in the works for roughly a year but that "it seems like forever."

The Mall of Georgia is the largest mall in the Southeast and has more than 200 stores.

"I think it's a great fit for us," Cahill said. "It's something we need to have."

The store will feature Apple products like its Mac computer line, its portable music and video device (the iPod) and its new cell phone (the iPhone).

The iPhone was released June 29 and was sold only at Apple and AT&T Wireless stores. All the AT&T Wireless stores in Gwinnett sold out in the first day, but national reports indicated Apple stores had larger supplies that lasted for several days.

"As we've just seen with the recent release of the new iPhone, Apple's cutting-edge products inspire a frenzy of devoted followers," Cahill said. "We anticipate that same level of excitement from shoppers when we welcome the new store at the Mall of Georgia this fall."

A phone message was left with Apple Inc. on Monday to find out any additional information on the opening, but the call was not returned by press time Tuesday.
