STONE MOUNTAIN - Stone Mountain is reaching out to its canine residents.
This summer marks the first season the city's dog park has been open. The new dog park is a unique facility created especially for dogs and their owners. Dog Park officially opened Memorial Day weekend of this year, with nothing other then a "doggie parade" to kick start the event. Since then, dog owners and their pets have been taking advantage of the park's atmosphere, designed to suit canine needs. At most parks, dogs are restricted to leashes. In contrast, Dog Park is completely fenced in, so dogs can roam leash-free and interact with other canines. The park also has smaller, fenced areas for small dogs to run and play. To ensure doggie safety, the park does establish some rules about canine (and human) behavior. All dogs must have tags, and owners are responsible for their dog's actions and wastes. The park also only allows three dogs per owner. No aggressive dogs are allowed, and pit bulls and rottweiler are prohibited from the park entirely. Because dogs will be running around, free of the immediate restriction of leashes, the park does not allow small children. Dog Park also suggests all dogs be spayed or neutered, as they will be interacting with each other freely. Dog Park is located near the much larger Stone Mountain Park, but the city of Stone Mountain hopes that dogs and their owners will choose to frequent the new, dog-friendly facility.More like this story
