Inmate files complaint

GAINESVILLE - An inmate filed a civil complaint in federal court against Barrow County Sheriff Joel Robinson, the county jail and Sgts. Andy Eck and Marvin Walker Nov. 29.

Federal Judge William C. O'Kelley has given Michael Richard Thomas until Feb. 2 to either pay the $350 filing fee or file papers proving he is indigent. If not, his case could be dismissed.

Thomas' complaint contends that he was denied use of the law library and that the 84-mile distance from Barrow to Lamar County was too far for his family to travel for visits.

Thomas was an inmate in the Lamar County jail when he filed the lawsuit. He has since been transferred to Philips Correctional Institute to serve a two-year sentence for a probation violation, according to a spokesman for the Barrow County Jail.
