Gwinnett teams will participate in state robotics competition

LAWRENCEVILLE - Some Gwinnett County robotics teams will participate in the FIRST Lego League state competition Saturday at Georgia Tech's Student Center.

The competition will bring together 48 Lego League teams from throughout the state. The teams are made up

of children ages

9 to 14 who have built

robots that explore


The Greater Atlanta Christian School, one Gwinnett County team that will compete Saturday, took first place in robot performance and won the overall championship in the FIRST Robotics Regional Competition at Wheeler High School in Marietta. It was the

second year in a row the team, the Spartanbots, has won.

Some teams that competed in the regional

competition at Peachtree Ridge High School are competing this weekend as well.

Osborne Middle School has three teams - the Nanolegologists, the Nanostrikers and Nano-Tech Inc. - that are advancing to the state competition. The teams placed second, sixth and seventh overall in the qualifying competition at Peachtree Ridge.

FIRST, or For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is a multinational nonprofit organization that aspires to make science, math, engineering and technology as appealing as sports are to children.

FIRST Lego League is considered the "little league" of FIRST Robotics, and it extends the concept of inspiring and celebrating science and

technology to children

ages 9 to 14,

using real-world context

and hands-on experimentation.
