Hank Johnson to take oath today

Gwinnett's newest representative in Congress will be sworn in today.

Hank Johnson, who defeated incumbent Cynthia McKinney during the Democratic Party primary last summer, will take his oath during a closed session at the Cannon House Office Building in Washington between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

A ceremonial swearing-in will be held with new Speaker Nancy Pelosi later that afternoon.

Johnson plans on hosting more than 100 people - family, friends, former campaign workers and constituents - at an open house in his new congressional office in the Longworth House Office Building. He'll also host a constituent tour and a reception at the Library of Congress.

Johnson joins U.S. Rep. John Linder, R-Duluth, as Gwinnett's representatives in Congress. His 4th District includes portions of the Lilburn area.

Kick-off

The Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce will host its annual legislative kick-off tonight, hosting members of Gwinnett's delegation to the Georgia General Assembly.

A reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the 1818 Club in Duluth.

Legislators are expected to give a preview to the 2007 session, which begins next week.
