AUBURN - Boise Building Materials Distribution is constructing a new distribution center in the Barrow County section of Auburn.
Officials say the move will bring 50 new jobs and a $13.5 million facility to Auburn, as well as allow BBMD to double its production.
The company will relocate from its Tucker facility, where there is no room for expansion, Plant Manager Ron Lee said.
"Our growth is phenomenal and we ran out of space here," Lee said. "We are landlocked."
The new facility will serve as a storage and distribution center for BBMD's building supply materials for customers across the Southeast region.
The new distribution center will house a 155,000-square-foot warehouse, 12,000 square feet of office space and 18 acres of paved inventory storage on 38 acres. The approximately 70-acre site is near the railroad on Price Road on the former Price property, for which Boise paid $3.5 million, accord to Auburn Mayor Harold Money. The company will construct a spur from the railroad tracks to service its facility.
"We chose Auburn because of land availability," Lee said. "We want to have land close to major highways so you can dispatch trucks to our customers in a speedy manner. Rail service was a plus. CSX has been our carrier here and this land is serviced by CSX. Auburn was gracious to work with us and get everything zoned properly."
J.W. Rooker & Associates is developing the site. The new facility is expected to open in the fall.
BBMD will get the best work staff the area has to offer, Money said.
"We're going to get together with Lisa Maloof at Lanier Tech and see what they need as far as people," Money said. "We want to send them qualified people give them the best we can."
Lee said he expects the company to double their employment.
"We have 40 employees here now and over next couple years we will total 90 to 100," Lee said. "We are not limited by size and can expand the business further. We have some folks looking to move to Auburn."
County Commission Chairman Doug Garrison said he is glad to see a commercial tax base growing in western Barrow County.
"We think its a good business and it will help us out economically with jobs and a commercial tax base," Garrison said. "There could be some spinoffs from that and hopefully attract more jobs and commercial businesses."
BBMD is a business unit of Boise Cascade, LLC, that manufactures and distributes lumber, particleboard, plywood, wood I-joints and laminated lumber. It operates approximately 30 wholesale building material distribution centers throughout the U.S.
BBMD is Auburn's third major building project joining a new Ingles supermarket and library.
