LAWRENCEVILLE - An overly cautious bus driver Monday set off a fire extinguisher on a Gwinnett County Transit bus.
The system has experienced five bus fires in the past 18 months, including two recent high-profile incidents, but Transit Director Tim Collins said there was no fire on the bus Monday. According to Collins, a light had come on in the dashboard to notify the driver that the wheelchair ramp was engaged. The driver "panicked" and hit a button to engage the bus's fire suppression system, which includes an extinguisher. "There was no fire," Collins said. "It was driver error and being overly cautious. But we'd rather that than not alert enough." There were passengers on the bus at the time.More like this story
