Police: Speed a factor in crash

SUWANEE - A 24-year-old Lawrenceville woman died Friday morning after she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into several trees.

Detective Jennifer Roberts, reserve spokeswoman for the Gwinnett County Police Department, said the woman, whose name is not being released until the family is notified, was traveling north on Interstate 985 near the Interstate 85 split when she lost control of her Honda Civic along a curve, driving off the road and crashing into several trees around 2 a.m. Friday.

Roberts said the woman was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center where she later died as a result of her injuries. She was the only one in the Civic and no one else was involved in the crash.

Roberts said the woman was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident.

"At this point I don't know enough about the incident to say if (a seat belt) would have made a difference," she said.

Investigators believe the driver's speed was a contributing factor in the accident, but Roberts was unsure how fast the woman was driving.

She said she did not know if the woman worked in the area or where she was driving to Friday morning. Roberts said investigators are trying to contact the driver's family and find out more information about the woman.
