Men arrested, face charges connected with shooting

DACULA - Two men were arrested Tuesday, charged in connection with the shooting of a 19-year-old Dacula man.

Investigators arrested 18-year-old Marco Danyel Mcilwain and Joseph Andrew Smith, 19, both of Dacula. Cpl. Darren Moloney, Gwinnett County Police Department spokesman, said the men are believed to be involved in the shooting of Jimmy Lee West.

Moloney said West was driving a Dodge Neon in the Dacula area Monday night when he was shot.

Police responded to calls of shots fired at 5:38 p.m. and arrived at 2891 Hill Circle, finding West in the car.

Moloney said he was unsure where the shooting occurred, but said investigators do not believe the incident took place at the Hill Circle address.

West was airlifted to Grady Hospital in Atlanta Monday night and was in stable condition as of press time Tuesday.

Mcilwain and Smith have been charged with felony aggravated assault and felony possession of a weapon during a crime. Both were taken to the Gwinnett County Detention Center and have been denied bond.

Investigators believe West was involved in a some kind of dispute with Mcilwain and Smith at the time of the shooting. But police are not releasing any other information about a motive.

"Investigators do have a motive, but they aren't releasing much," Moloney said.

Moloney said the three men knew each other and were more than just acquaintances.

"I don't know (the men's) relationship, but they definitely had a past history," he said.

Although addresses were not given, Moloney said West and the suspects lived within about 1 to 11⁄2 miles of each other in Dacula.

He said investigators think the shooting was not a random act of violence.
