BRASELTON - Police are investigating a bank robbery that happened Wednesday morning at the Peoples Bank on Ga. Highway 211 in Braselton, across from Chateau Elan in Barrow County.
A light-skinned black or Hispanic man walked into the bank just after 10 a.m. wearing a ski mask, gloves and a hooded sweatshirt, said Stephen Emmett, spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The man approached numerous teller stations brandishing a black semiautomatic pistol and demanding money. Surveillance video shows him standing on a teller's counter waving the gun.
He left on foot with an undetermined amount of money and was last seen in the Publix shopping center next door to the bank.
The man was described as about 5 feet 5 inches tall weighing about 130 pounds with brown eyes. He was last seen wearing white gloves with blue fingertips and palms, baggy dark blue jeans with a tan mark above the left knee, black tennis shoes, a dark ski mask and a hooded sweatshirt. The sweatshirt has a yellow left sleeve, a blue or black right sleeve, triangular colored designs on the hood and a design on the chest. He may be carrying a tan cloth bag.
No one saw an accomplice, Emmett said.
The FBI, Georgia State Patrol, Barrow County Sheriff's Office, Braselton police and Hoschton police are investigating the robbery. Police are reviewing bank surveillance equipment and security cameras in nearby businesses, as well as using a helicopter and K-9 units to search for the man.
Peoples Bank President Chris Maddox was on the scene but declined to give an interview.
The Peoples Bank is based in Winder. It has three offices in Winder and one each in Auburn, Braselton and Statham.
