KANSAS CITY, MO. - Collins Hill has shown already why it has the top-ranked wrestling team in Georgia. This past weekend, the Eagles proved they were one of the top teams in the country.
Collins Hill placed third at the prestigious Midwest National Wrestling Classic in Kansas City, Mo., on Saturday. The tournament featured 24 schools and 18 of those teams were ranked in the top three in their state. Teams from Missouri, Oklahoma, Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Illinois were at the tournament. The Eagles, who are ranked No. 1 in Class AAAAA, had six wrestlers place in the top eight. David Coffey, who took first place, was Collins Hill's lone champion. The 285-pound wrestler is undefeated for the season. T.J. Mitchell (112) and Joel Smith (135) took second. In a weight class that featured seven state champions and one runner-up, Taylor Knapp (145) placed third. Nick Smith (171) took fourth and Allen Willard (119) was eighth. Skutt Catholic (Neb.), which has won the last 10 state championships in Nebraska, won the tournament. Ponca City (Okla.), which won state titles from 2003-06, placed second. Collins Hill finished eighth at the tournament last year. WRESTLING Parkview places fourth, Peachtree Ridge 12th at McCallie Invitational McCALLIE, TENN. - Parkview had seven wrestlers place, including two champions, as the Panthers placed fourth at the McCallie Invitational (Tenn.) on Saturday. The Panthers' Carson Fields (135 pounds) and Brian Farris (285) were champions with Fields also being named most outstanding wrestler. Jason Hail (145) placed third, Clint Jones (112) fourth, Alex Hillis (130) and Matt Johnson (189) were fifth and Kevin O'Conner (103) was sixth. Peachtree Ridge placed 12th in the tournament with three wrestlers placing. Kendall Albert (140) was the Lions' only champion and remained undefeated for the season. Matt Chapman (160) and Sam Kuntz (189) placed third. Andrew Sartain withdrew from the tourney because of an injury. Harrison was tournament champion. Mill Creek's Anderton wins Brookwood Invitational SNELLVILLE - Mill Creek's Billy Anderton won the 135-pound weight class at the Brookwood Invitational on Saturday. Anderton is 19-1 for the season. Augustus Appling (125) and Nick Voss (152) were fourth. The Hawks finished eighth in the tournament. Wesleyan goes undefeated at Tomahawk Duals KENNESAW - Wesleyan went 5-0 at the Tomahawk Duals on Saturday at North Cobb High School. The Wolves beat Chapel Hill 54-16, South Paulding 70-11, Whitewater 40-24, Etowah 51-18 and McIntosh 37-34. Brooks Spraetz (103), Josh Jeng (125), Michael Douglas (189), and Kelby Smith (215) were all undefeated for the day. - From staff reportsMore like this story
