Location: This Lilburn linchpin sits at the end of a small row of shops on Main Street in the (tiny) heart of downtown.
Owners: Husband-and-wife duo Doug and Kyle Wright.
Hours: The Blue Rooster is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and on Saturday, with extended dinner hours on Fridays, until 8 p.m. The restaurant is closed on Sundays.
Atmosphere: Like something that leapt right off the pages of Southern Living magazine, the restaurant is steeped in quaint, small-town decor. Strings of lights line the restaurant's adjacent dining room, where wisteria hangs off latticework suspended from the ceiling.
Menus scrawled on chalkboards help retain the retro-chic feel, and December is a better time than any to visit, as the walls are decked in all things Christmas, including a back hallway decorated with artwork from local schoolchildren.
The menu: The Wrights' chicken salad - a slightly sweet signature blend of white meat, sliced grapes and almonds, among other ingredients - is the star of the show here, the owners say, but there are plenty of other things to try out in the restaurant's ever-expanding lineup.
The Grilled Blue Rooster is an Italian-flavored offering with Genoa salami, pepperoni and provolone, topped with red peppers, lettuce and pesto and served on ciabatta bread.
The cafe's traditional menu of Southern comfort food doesn't stop the Wrights from adding new dishes to their repertoire every now and then. The latest two sandwiches are a Reuben big enough to belong in a Manhattan deli, and a Cuban loaded up with layers of pork and ham and topped with tangy mustard.
The Blue Rooster Cafe also offers breakfast items in the early hours and dinner entrees on Friday nights.
Beverages: Stick with Southern staples like sweet tea or lemonade, or get your caffeine kick with a cafe latte, an espresso or any number of other stimulating coffee choices, all of which can be sweetened up with a 50-cent syrup shot (in flavors like caramel praline and spiced eggnog latte).
Dessert: Sugary confections reign supreme at The Blue Rooster Cafe, jockeying with the chicken salad for a position as the main attraction. There are fresh pies, cakes and pastries galore.
And then there are big cookies (in oatmeal raisin, chocolate chip, macadamia nut and more), bigger brownies and even bigger sandwich cookies stacked atop each other and fastened with a mound of frosting.
Things you might not know: The restaurant is looking to add more to its menu soon, including new breakfast items.
"My husband makes amazing omelettes," Kyle Wright said.
