LAWRENCEVILLE - The Golden Key International Honour Society will be the first academic honor society at Georgia Gwinnett College, officials announced Thursday.
The International Leadership Council and Board of Directors of Golden Key approved the provisional chartering of the honor society chapter on the college's campus, according to a news release. The final chartering is contingent upon the school's accreditation.
Members of the Council and Board of Directors visited Georgia Gwinnett Thursday for a breakfast and campus tour to discuss the details of the honor society's establishment.
Golden Key is an academic honor society that recognizes and encourages scholastic achievement and excellence among college and university students from all academic disciplines, according to its Web site.
Information about membership and selection will be finalized by a college committee, and invitations will be issued to students in the spring semester, the news release states.
"The Golden Key International Honour Society not only provides students with a competitive academic honors program, but also places GGC at the forefront of academic excellence along with other competitive institutions across the state, country and world," Devi Drexler, the college's dean of student development, said in a statement.
Jim Fatzinger, the college's associate vice president for student affairs, said he appreciates everyone who worked to bring the honor society to the college.
"This is another 'first' to be celebrated by the GGC community and our students," he said in a statement.
