Bridging the gap
Suwanee Creek Park pedestrian connector finished

SUWANEE - Mobilization and convenience was the goal of two recent additions to Suwanee's four-mile Suwanee Creek Greenway.

Lynne DeWilde, city spokeswoman, said the city recently finished a pedestrian connector and a nearly one-mile soft surface trail at Suwanee Creek Park.

The new connector, which links the Town Center area to the Greenway by way of Portland Trail Drive, and a soft trail were completed in late November and are open for use.

"The main goal was to create connectivity between our most frequently visited areas," DeWilde said. "We want to create pedestrian accessibility throughout the city."

Located at the head of Suwanee Creek Park, the new soft surface trail provides previously inaccessible views of the woods, wetlands and creek within the interior of the park.

The trail can be accessed by a concrete shortcut at the back parking lot of the park at 1170 Buford Highway, DeWilde said. A paved loop behind the park's Alder Pavilion also leads to the new path.

According to a city press release, signs will be posted soon to indicate trail access points.

DeWilde said the centerpiece of the concrete and boardwalk connector is a 160-foot bridge that spans Suwanee Creek, which runs parallel to Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road.

The trail also connects to the restroom facilities and a recently completed outdoor classroom, constructed by local Eagle Scouts.

"Connectivity has always been an important theme and focus of significant efforts for the city of Suwanee," wrote City Manager Marty Allen in a release. "We're pleased to provide this pedestrian link between two of Suwanee's most popular destinations."

DeWilde said while the new trails have only been open for use a few weeks, they are being used.

A ribbon cutting ceremony officially opening the new connector is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Friday. DeWilde said the community is invited to the afternoon event at the boardwalk near the head of the trail.
