Gwinnett champs head to Chick-fil-A youth bowl

The reward for being a county championship team in youth football comes on Saturday.

The Gwinnett Football League's champions in its two oldest divisions - seventh-graders from Parkview and eighth-graders from North Gwinnett - will compete in this weekend's Chick-fil-A Bowl Youth Football League Championships at Georgia Tech's Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Tech's stadium will be transformed into what organizers call "a miniatuure Chick-fil-A Bowl," a smaller-scale version of the Dec. 31 college bowl game featuring Auburn and Clemson. Bowl signage, field decoration, player uniform patches and other bowl treats are offered for the fortunate players whose team advances to the Atlanta event.

Gwinnett's teams in the championships will meet the North Georgia Football League's two champions, seventh- and eighth-grade teams from Wheeler. The NGFL is Cobb County's youth league.

Parkview's matchup will be at 1:30 p.m., followed by the 3:30 p.m. North game, which should be completed in time for the youth players to get to the Georgia Dome for the North varsity's 6 p.m. Class AAAAA semifinal game.

The two youth matchups at Tech are preceded by two non-Gwinnett matchups featuring the 120- and 140-pound champions of the Georgia Youth Football Conference and the United Youth Football Conference.

Youth teams that win championships Saturday at Tech are invited to participate in the team walks prior the Dec. 31 Chick-fil-A Bowl.
