WINDER - The runoff match-up between two people seeking government seats in Barrow County proved a close race.
Unofficial results show Bill Healan won the Barrow County District 3 Commissioner seat by 34 votes, or 57.3 percent. Healan defeated Alfonza Brown 140-104 in the county's runoff race - a field that was whittled down from six after the Nov. 6 election. Healan, a former chairman of the county's Democratic Party, said he wants information and records made more accessible to residents. He also proposed to make sure people's voices are heard, he said. Healan, 62, a lawyer, could not be reached for comment Tuesday night. The District 3 seat became open when Roger Wehunt resigned to mount an unsuccessful campaign to become Winder's mayor. Brown applauded his competitor for running a clean race. "I say congratulations to Mr. Healan for his win," said Brown. "I will continue to do as I have done - to make Barrow County a better county. I think Mr. Healan will do the same." BARROW District 3 Commissioner Photo not available Alfonza Brown William Doyle HealanMore like this story
