Suspicious fire burns down house

n WINDER - One person was displaced Wednesday when fire destroyed a house at 415 Maple Park Drive in Winder at 6:45 p.m.

The resident was at home at the time the fire broke out, but suffered no injuries.

Barrow County fire investigators have deemed the fire to be of suspicious origins. It remains under investigation.

Winder burglars take copper wire from two homes

n WINDER - Winder police scared off a burglar Tuesday night, but the burglar still got away with a length of copper wire.

The home's resident was in the process of moving from one home to another. Several valuable items remained in the East Broad Street home. When the man returned to move his property, he found his items moved to the living room as if for a quick getaway, police reports said.

Winder police had scared off the burglar the night before while investigating a suspicious person call, police reports said.

The home's resident discovered the copper line to the outdoor propane storage tank had been cut and taken, releasing the stored propane.

In a separate case, a length of copper wire was taken from a Miles Patrick Road home Monday. The interior of the house is being rebuilt due to water damage. Workers discovered copper piping had been cut loose from the water heater and throughout the house, as well as workmen's tools, police reports said.

There are no suspects.

Money taken from closet in home

n WINDER - A woman told police she returned to her Fairview Court home to find $600 missing.

The woman said she found her back door standing open and the money missing from a box hidden in the closet, police reports said.

There were no suspects.

Man charged with stealing 36 beers

n WINDER - Winder police arrested Timothy Eubanks, 25, of Winder, and charged him with shoplifting two 18-packs of beer.

A clerk at the Kangaroo, 93 E. May St., told police that Eubanks took the two packs of beer from the cooler at 2:50 a.m. When she told him she could not sell beer at that hour, Eubanks told her that his mama loves him and left with the beer.

A Winder police officer located Eubanks walking down the street with the beer.

Pants stolen from unlocked window

n WINDER - A Wood Avenue man told Winder police that he woke up Tuesday and found his pants gone.

The man said he had laid his pants on the laundry basket in front of a window and went to bed.

When he awoke, the window was open and his pants were gone.

The man lost his keys, check book and wallet, which held $130, his social security card and Medicaid card.

Officer shoots aggressive pit bull

n LAWRENCEVILLE - A Gwinnett County Police officer was forced to shoot a dog Tuesday when the animal became vicious.

According to a police report, the officer was called to the Magic Touch Barber at 955 Pleasant Hill Road about 8 a.m. to reports that a pit bull was attempting to bite people walking by the shop.

When the officer arrived the dog began growling and charged the officer who responded by firing two shots. The dog ran to a dog house behind the barber shop after being shot in the chest.

Animal Control officers were called to take away the animal, the report said.

A barber at the shop told the officer the dog belonged to a former barber shop employee. He said he planned to get rid of the dog due to its aggressive behavior.

Man charged with loitering, prowling

NORCROSS - Police caught a man Saturday who had been peering into a Norcross apartment owner's window.

The woman living at the Copper Mill Apartments on Jerry Way said she saw a skinny Hispanic man looking in her window shortly before midnight Saturday.

After the woman gave Gwinnett police a description of the man, officers found him walking through the woman's apartment complex.

Juan Jesus Ramirez-Cuartez, 35, was arrested and charged with loitering and prowling. He told police he lived in the Copper Mill apartment complex.
