LAWRENCEVILLE - A Lawrenceville city official has resigned as his trial for receiving child pornography looms in federal court.
William Carter Gorman, 54, resigned last week as treasurer of the Lawrenceville Downtown Development Authority following his July arrest, Mayor Rex Millsaps confirmed Wednesday. The resignation was conducted through Gorman's attorney, Millsaps said. The mayor believes Gorman was a board member since the authority formed several years ago, he said. The downtown authority elected Danny Gravitt as Gorman's successor in the treasurer's seat during a board vote on Monday. Gravitt was formerly a member of the seven-seat board. The authority works to "create and promote economic stability of historic Lawrenceville," according to the city's Web site. Gorman pleaded not guilty Aug. 15 in Atlanta to federal charges of receiving and possessing child pornography. A U.S. Department of Justice spokesperson said last week Gorman's trial could take months to reach federal court. Gorman will be held without bond until his trial. If convicted on the federal charges, Gorman could face a minimum of five years in prison. Local authorities have also charged Gorman with two counts of felony child molestation for alleged misconduct with a 13-year-old female acquaintance at his home in Lawrenceville. Gorman could face at least 10 years in prison if convicted of both counts of child molestation, according to Georgia law.More like this story
