LAWRENCEVILLE - A Duluth teen was sentenced Monday to serve 35 years in prison for the slaying of a Norcross man, Gwinnett District Attorney's Office officials said Tuesday.
Jovon Nicholson, 17, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for the slaying of 46-year-old Aurelio German Mendoza-Garcia, a construction worker from Norcross. Nicholson admitted to a part in the shooting death of Mendoza-Garcia during what an incident report describes as an armed robbery and carjacking at the Bristol Court Apartments in Norcross on July 8, 2006. Two other teens were also charged with Mendoza-Garcia's death. Tunde Alatise, 17, of Lilburn was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in April. Another suspect, 17-year-old Richard Shugart of Duluth, remains in the Gwinnett County Jail awaiting trial, according to online records. The teens were also charged in a similar incident that took place at the Kendall Creek Apartments on Hunters Ridge Lane. The three reportedly robbed and stole an Acura Integra the same day Mendoza-Garcia was shot to death, according to a police report. Nicholson and Alatise were both convicted of the additional charges, a District Attorney's Office secretary confirmed Tuesday. Specifics of the case were not available Monday. Messages left with the teens' attorneys and Assistant District Attorney David Keeton, who prosecuted Monday's case, were not returned.More like this story
