CDC features health photos

ATLANTA - An exhibit featuring the work of Brazilian photojournalist Sebastiao Salgado opened Monday at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

Salgado's work documents the global effort to eradicate polio, picturing mass vaccination campaigns against the disease in Somalia, Sudan, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Pakistan.

His photographs can be viewed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, with extended 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. hours Thursday, in the Global Health Odyssey on the CDC campus at 1600 Clifton Road. The exhibit runs through Jan. 4.

Admission and parking are free, but visitors must have a government-issued photo ID.

Chance to give blood in Snellville

SNELLVILLE - The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive at a Snellville Wal-Mart this week.

Donors can give from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Wal-Mart Supercenter located at 3435 Centerville Highway in Snellville.

All donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more and show photo identification at the time of donation.

Bloodmobile to visit Suwanee Bank of America

SUWANEE - LifeSouth will team up with Bank of America this weekend for a community blood drive.

Look for the bloodmobile from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the bank located at 3165 Peachtree Parkway in Suwanee.

All donors will receive a free ice cream cone from the Mayfield Dairy in Braselton, a recognition item and a cholesterol screening.

Free cooking classes to be held this fall

DECATUR - Sign-ups have begun for a free cancer-prevention cooking course to be held in Decatur.

Participants will learn how a proper diet can help people prevent and survive cancer during the eight-session cooking class, which will be held Sept. 11 through Oct. 30 at the Austin Drive Senior Campus, 1989 Austin Drive, Decatur. Classes run from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. every Tuesday.
