of Barrow schools up for state award

WINDER - Ron Saunders, Superintendent of Barrow County Schools, is nominated for the Georgia School Superintendents Association 2008 Superintendent of the Year.

Saunders is one of four finalists, the winner of which will be announced Nov. 30 at the BSBA/GSSA Winter Conference at the Waverly Hotel in Cobb County. He was nominated by all nine members of the Barrow County Board of Education.

"I am floored to be nominated by my board, and I was very humbled by it," Saunders said. "I have a good staff who work very hard, and I am just fortunate enough to be their leader."

Saunders was nominated on the basis of Barrow County's SAT scores, partnerships with Georgia Institute of Technology and the Board of Regents and the school system's membership in Internet 2.

"Dr. Saunders has done a lot for our schools, and he has been instrumental in making sure the board has the things it needs and keeping us up to date with state laws," said Connie Wehunt, District 3 board member.

Also nominated are L. C. Evans, Forsyth County; Kelly Henson, Floyd County; and Jack Parish, Henry County. The finalists were chosen from 23 superintendents nominated. The winner will represent Georgia in the national competition.
