student wins honor in national contest

A student from Gwinnett Technical College's commercial photography program won top honors in the national SkillsUSA competition, finishing in the top 10 in this summer's competition.

Student Jennifer Kolb placed ninth in the photography category at the competition, held recently in Kansas City, Mo. Last year, local student Jacqueline Hawthorne received the gold medal in the same category.

"The SkillsUSA Competition was a wonderful learning experience and gave me motivation to strive for even greater excellence," Kolb said. "I felt very honored to have attended the SkillsUSA Competition through Gwinnett Tech."

To advance to the national competition, Kolb won at local and state competitions earlier this year.

More than 5,000 students participated in the national SkillsUSA hands-on competition in 87 occupational and leadership skill areas.

Superintendent seeks students for advisory council

State Schools Superintendent Kathy Cox is accepting applications through Sept. 7 for her 2007-08 Student Advisory Council.

The members of the council meet four times during the school year with Cox to discuss how decisions made at the state level are affecting students throughout Georgia. Council members act as liaisons between the state Department of Education and the students.

All students in ninth through 12th grades are eligible to apply. Applicants should be able to attend all four meetings, which are tentatively scheduled for Oct. 15, Dec. 3, Feb. 11 and April 28.

Students win awards in family, consumer sciences

Several students from Meadowcreek and Berkmar high schools have recently won state and national awards in a family and consumer sciences education conference and competition.

Meadowcreek High students Camly Nguyen and Yen Sy earned the national silver medal as a team in the Applied Technology category during the national Family, Community, Career Leaders of America Leadership Conference and Competition.

In addition, several Gwinnett students placed at the state level:

' Gold Medals: Jenna Orban of Berkmar High in Career Investigation and Nguyen and Sy in Applied Technology

' Silver Medals: Brittany Flowers of Berkmar High in Interpersonal Communications and Cherise Williams of Meadowcreek High in Illustrated Talk

' Bronze Medals: Christean Wright of Meadowcreek High in Applied Technology

The FCCLA is a national student organization that builds leaders through family and consumer sciences education. Several Gwinnett County public high schools are affiliated with the national group, including Berkmar, Duluth, Dacula, Meadowcreek, Mill Creek and Peachtree Ridge.

Local students win scholarships

Eleven Gwinnett County high schoolers have been named recipients of the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship, which gives $1,500 to exceptionally able seniors who show promise of continued excellence in postsecondary education. The scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced that 10 additional Gwinnett graduates have received college-sponsored scholarships. The 2007 Merit Scholars were originally announced in May. Each student has earned a scholarship of $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
