WINDER - Barrow County's Board of Commissioners will consider a rezoning request that, if approved, would place a 20-home subdivision within 2,000 feet of a runway at the Northeast Georgia Regional Airport.
The planning department recommends the board deny a request to rezone 20 acres at 807 Ga. Highway 82 from agricultural to residential, citing high noise levels and the property's designation as a light industrial area on the county's future land-use map. The board dealt with a similar request in 2005, when Tim Casper requested rezoning an unspecified number of acres at Giles and Elder Roads, from agricultural to residential. The board denied the rezoning and recommended establishing a 3,500-foot boundary radius around the airport within which only compatible commercial uses could be established. Some residents living near the airport have complained about the noise created by airplanes landing and taking off. In June, Barrow County deputies arrested a man accused of leaving potentially threatening messages on airport telephones in reference to low-flying airplanes. Roland Lee Germaine, 56, of Winder was charged with three counts of making harassing phone calls. Also Tuesday, the board will unveil the proposed 2008 budget in a special called meeting at 5 p.m., two hours before the regular session.
