Russell Smiley, Jr.

Russell Bruce Smiley, Jr., M.D., 72, of LaGrange, died August 20, 2007 at Hospice LaGrange. Born June 4, 1935 in Salem, VA, the son of the late Russell and Peggy Duke Smiley, of Salem. A graduate of Roanoke College, he received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, in Richmond, VA. After serving two and one half years in the U.S. Air Force, he completed his residency and fellowship in Cardiology at Emory University in Atlanta. In 1973 he was recruited to establish the department of Cardiology at Joan Glancy Memorial Hospital in Duluth, GA, where he opened the first Coronary Care Unit serving Gwinnett and surrounding counties. In addition, he had a successful private practice for over 30 years. In 2000, he joined the Clark Holder Clinic Department of Cardiology, where he remained until October 2006. A third generation physician, Dr. Smiley loved medicine and was dedicated to caring for his patients. He was a kind and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jeanne Baker Smiley; his son Russell Bruce Smiley, III, both of LaGrange; his daughter Elizabeth Smiley and her husband Andrew Chancey of Charlottesville, VA; his sister Peggy S. Mills of Salem, VA; and his grandson Elias Chancey of Charlottesville, VA. Plans for a Requiem Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.
