Prep Roundup: Burns pitches, hits undefeated Grayson past Milton 7-0

SUWANEE - Mandi Burns kept her pitching record perfect and also powered the Grayson fastpitch softball team's offense Wednesday in a 7-0 victory over Milton in the Home America Mortgage Softball Invitational.

Burns (3-0) struck out seven batters and allowed three hits in four innings and made an equally big contribution with her hitting. She was 2-for-2 and drove in four of Grayson's runs.

The third-ranked Rams, also 3-0, got two runs, two RBIs, a triple and a stolen base from Shannon Bear and a 1-for-3 effort with three runs from Hayley Downs.

Amanda Hutcheson, Blake Wilson, Rachel McElroy and Heidi McNelly also had hits for the victors in a game played at Peachtree Ridge.


Peachtree Ridge 6, Milton 1

SUWANEE - Peachtree Ridge evened its record at 4-4 with a 6-1 win over Milton on Wednesday in the Home America Mortgage Softball Invitational.

The Lions' Krysten Connelly was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits and one run in five innings. She also struck out four batters.

Callie Fernandez was 3-for-3 with a double and a run to lead the Peachtree Ridge offense, while teammate Chelsea Parrish was 2-for-2 with triple and a run.

Collins Hill 4, Roswell 0

SUWANEE - Second-ranked Collins Hill, behind the pitching of Cat Tarvin, defeated Roswell 4-0 on Wednesday on the opening day of the Home America Mortgage Softball Invitational.

Tarvin allowed just two hits and struck out three batters in six innings to earn the win. The Eagles (3-0) were led offensively by Caroline Cooper (1-for-3, double, RBI), Suzy Kutney (1-for-2, RBI) and Alexa Lewis (1-for-2, RBI).

Mill Creek 11, Jackson County 0

HOSCHTON - Fourth-ranked Mill Creek opened its Home America Mortgage Softball Invitational on Wednesday with an 11-0 win over Jackson County in five innings.

Lauren Kaczynski was the winning pitcher, allowing one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts. The Hawks (3-1) were led offensively by Morgan Bullock (3-for-4, three RBIs, two runs) and Hannah Graham (2-for-3, double, RBI, run).

Dacula 5, North Gwinnett 5

SUWANEE - Dacula and North Gwinnett battled to a

5-5 tie in a five-inning game Wednesday at the Home America Mortgage Softball Invitational at North.

Kasey Martin was 2-for-2 to lead the Bulldogs, ranked seventh in Class AAAAA.

Duluth 17, Campbell 0

DULUTH - Julie Tilton's three-run double in the third inning was the big hit as Duluth rolled past Campbell 17-0 in the Home America Mortgage Softball Invitational.

Sam Metzler, Chantelle Curinton, Tara Johnson and Sam Martin also had hits for the Wildcats. Ivy Knox and Maggie Kooker shared pitching duties for the victors.

Lakeside 25, Meadowcreek 0

ATLANTA - Meadowcreek lost its season opener 25-0 in three innings to Lakeside on Wednesday.

Buford 8, West Forsyth 0

BUFORD - Ashley Razey's two-run home run in the first inning propelled Buford to an 8-0 win over West Forsyth on Wednesday in the Buford Invitational. Razey finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

The Wolves (3-0) also got solid games from Nichole Bell (2-for-3, double, two RBIs) and Shelbi Valek (2-for-2, RBI). Melissa Higginbotham (2-0) was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts and three hits allowed in five innings.

Apalachee 6, Wesleyan 3

BUFORD - Courtney Gunby had six strikeouts in relief to earn the victory Wednesday as Apalachee beat Wesleyan 6-3 in the Buford Invitational. Gunby also was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

Elissa Greene was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run for Apalachee (4-0), which also got hits from Kimmie Bunten, Erica Dale and Ansley Thompson.
