BUFORD - Authorities are unsure what caused a 21-year-old Norcross man to drown at Lake Lanier on Friday.
Hall County firefighters pulled Michael Thomas Manning's body from an area of water near Van Pugh North park shortly after the 4:30 p.m. drowning, Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman Jennifer Barnes said.
Barnes said Manning was attempting to swim back to the shore when he went under the water.
"He was swimming with several different people off a house boat that was tied to the shore near a park called Van Pugh North," Barnes said. "Apparently, he began to struggle and attempted to swim back to the shore when he went under. We're not exactly sure what caused him to go under."
Barnes said whatever led to Manning's death did not appear to be suspicious or violent. She said no other details of the drowning were available as of press time Monday.
Barns said 38 people have drowned at the lake this year.
