Car dealer making donations to local animal shelters

DULUTH - Atlanta Classic Cars will make a donation to three local animal shelters from now until the end of September every time a car is leased or purchased.

Money will go to the Society of Humane Friends, Atlanta Pet Rescue and Adoption, and Fur Kids. The donations will go toward spaying and neutering shelter animals, making them more desirable for adoption.

The car dealer's goal is to help spay and neuter more than 600 dogs and cats.

Swimming pools change hours

LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County swimming pools have changed their hours with the end of summer vacation.

The seasonal Best Friend, Dacula, Rhodes Jordan and Lenora Park pools will now only be open on weekends.

Best Friend Park Pool and Lenora Park Pool will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Saturdays and from 1 to 6 p.m. Sundays. Dacula Park Pool will be open from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, and Rhodes Jordan Park Pool will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.

Bogan, Bethesda, Collins Hill and Mountain Park Aquatic Centers will maintain their normal operating hours.

All pools will be open through Labor Day. After that, seasonal pools will close for the season.

Additionally, Mountain Park, Bogan and Bethesda Aquatic Centers will be closed Sept. 4-9 and will reopen for the winter season Sept. 10 under a winter schedule. Collins Hill Aquatic Center will be closed for about six weeks after Labor Day for renovation.

VFW gives man prestigious honor

GRAYSON - John A. Veverka of Grayson, commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5255 in Lawrenceville, recently achieved All American status as a post commander, one of the most prestigious honors given by the group.

The criteria for the honor is based on outstanding achievement in membership growth and participation in other VFW programs that benefit veterans and their communities.

Woman to serve on sorority's PR team

LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County resident Bettina Benoit Durant has been selected to serve as a regional information officer on the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. South Atlantic Region Information Team.

Selected for her commitment to publicizing the sorority's service to Gwinnett County and beyond, Durant serves as public relations chairman of the Gwinnett-based Upsilon Alpha Omega Chapter under the leadership of President Geri Baldwin Gonzalez.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. is the first Greek-letter sorority for college-educated black women.
