NORCROSS - Investigators released a sketch Wednesday of a black man suspected of shooting a man in Norcross early Monday morning during a robbery attempt turned deadly.
Police describe the shooter as a dark-skinned black man, wearing a light-colored, possibly white baseball cap and shirt and black, baggy pants. The "chubby" man is believed to be approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and between 160 and 170 pounds.
The victim, who is still unidentified, died of a gunshot wound to the chest. Authorities are trying to notify the victim's relatives before releasing his name, said Gwinnett County Police spokeswoman Cpl. Illana Spellman.
While walking to her home inside the Steeple Chase apartment complex on Singleton Road shortly after 1 a.m. Monday, Sixta Ciriaco Clase and the unidentified man were robbed at gunpoint, according Spellman.
Preliminary investigations indicate Clase was being escorted home from her shift at the Santo Domingo restaurant by a man when the two were approached by a black man brandishing a gun, Spellman said.
Police said the pair noticed the man following them and when they turned to face the man he demanded Clase's purse, keys and cell phone. Clase ran away as the man demanded money from Clase's unidentified escort. Spellman said Clase heard gunshots as she fled.
Spellman said authorities pronounced the man dead at the scene. It is unclear what the victim's relationship was to Clase, she said.
The public is urged to contact the Gwinnett County Police Criminal Investigations Division at 770-513-5300 with information in this case.
