NORCROSS - A robbery at a Norcross apartment complex turned into a deadly shooting Monday morning, authorities said.
While walking to her home inside the Steeple Chase apartment complex on Singleton Road shortly after 1 a.m. Monday, Sixta Ciriaco Clase and an unidentified man were robbed at gunpoint, according to Gwinnett County Police Department spokeswoman Cpl. Illana Spellman.
Preliminary investigations indicate Clase was being escorted home from her shift at the Santo Domingo restaurant by a man when the two were approached by a black man brandishing a gun, Spellman said.
Police said the pair noticed the man following them and when they turned to face the man he demanded Clase's purse, keys and cell phone. Clase ran away as the man demanded money from Clase's unidentified escort. Spellman said Clase heard gunshots as she fled.
Spellman said authorities arrived finding Clase's escort with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Spellman said it is unclear what the victim's relationship was to Clase.
"Whether he worked with her or what we're not sure," Spellman said. "I do know that he was romantically interested in her and was escorting her home."
According to Spellman, authorities are trying to notify the victim's relatives before releasing his name.
Spellman said the shooter is described as a dark-skinned black man, wearing a light colored baseball cap and shirt and black, baggy pants. The man is believed to be approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall.
