LAWRENCEVILLE - Construction to improve the pathway to the Mall of Georgia will begin Sunday, if weather permits.
The project to widen Interstate 85 northbound from Interstate 985 to Ga. Highway 20, officials hope, will ease traffic congestion in northern Gwinnett.
"We hope the widening of I-85 will help alleviate traffic in the area and help foster a smoother ride into Mall of Georgia," mall General Manager Mike Lowrey said. "We welcome any efforts to improve congestion around the mall and provide easier access for our shoppers."
According to Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Teri Pope, crews will close lanes overnight for about two weeks. Beginning Sunday, the lanes will close no earlier than 9 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m.
"One or two lanes of I-85 north will be closed each night. Delays are expected in the area," Pope said.
Officials hope to wrap up the project, which will only impact the northbound lanes of the interstate, by April 30, 2008.
