Looking for something to do with your little princess this weekend? Check out New Dawn Theater Company's production of "A Little Princess."

"A Little Princess" stars Ariel Gravely, 9, as Sara, a young girl who was raised in India by her affluent, adoring father and sent to London to be educated at Miss Minchin's school for young ladies. Miss Minchin (played by Eliza Gravely, Ariel's mother) at first spoils Sara because of her father's wealth. But after Sara's father dies suddenly, leaving the young girl penniless, Miss Minchin forces her into servitude at the school.

"The hardest part for Eliza was having to be mean to her daughter, but she seemed like she had fun with it after awhile," said director Sherry Ingbritsen.

This version of "A Little Princess" is based loosely on the two film versions - the 1939 version, starring Shirley Temple as Sara, and director Alfonso Cuaron's 1995 adaptation.

Ingbritsen said the New Dawn show is great for moms and daughters or for grandparents looking to do something fun with their grandkids.

"A Little Princess" runs through Aug. 12 at Duluth's Second Stage, 3087 Main St., Duluth. Show times are at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. matinee shows are offered on Saturday and Sunday.

Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for children, with a 10 percent discount for groups of 15 or more.

High school

students take on 'Hamlet'

Most people would cringe at the thought of high school students performing Shakespeare. However, the Shakespeare Tavern's production of "Hamlet" is worth the trip to downtown Atlanta.

"Hamlet" is presented by the Atlanta Shakespeare Company Education Department's Shakespeare Intensive for Teens.

The four-week program is for high school students interested in advancing their skills as actors, and who also have an interest in Shakespeare. The cast studied various performance types and techniques and rehearsed vigorously for their final performance.

Performances will be at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 7 p.m. Monday. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students. For more information, call 404-874-5299.
