Traffic delayed after crews hit gas line

BUFORD - A gas leak at a Buford shopping center caused delays for morning commuters for more than an hour Wednesday.

Gwinnett County Fire Department spokesman Lt. Thomas Rutledge said the leak began when workers constructing a shopping center on Hamilton Mill Road hit a gas line.

Rutledge said contractors working at the shopping center were evacuated until Buford Gas was able to stop the leak shortly before 11 a.m.

Another group of construction workers hit a gas line Wednesday morning while digging at Highpoint Road near Oak Road in Snellville.

Highpoint Road was closed going in both directions from about 9:26 a.m. until shortly after 11:30 a.m.

Fire destroys abandoned house

DACULA - Authorities are looking into the cause of a fire that began at an abandoned house in Dacula on Wednesday.

Passing drivers alerted 911. When firefighters arrived at the home on Auburn Road at Old Fountain Road they found it engulfed in flames.

According to a Gwinnett County Fire Department press release, the fire completely destroyed the house.

No injuries were reported.

Eighty cartons of cigarettes stolen

DULUTH - A store manager of a Citgo Food Mart discovered more than $2,000 worth of cigarette cartons missing from his Duluth store Monday morning.

According to a police report, the manager found the front glass of the business on Old Norcross Road smashed.

Approximately 80 cartons of Marlboro and Newport cigarettes were missing.

Man charged with DUI, endangerment

DULUTH - A 39-year-old man was arrested at Discover Mills on Saturday after police noticed the man urinating outside the mall, according to a police report.

An police officer saw Ignacio Tovalin of Norcross allegedly drive erratically through the mall parking lot then stop and urinate on a mall retaining wall while his 7-year-old daughter sat in the passenger's seat.

When speaking to Tovalin police noticed the man smelled of alcohol. Tovalin admitted to having a "big beer."

The 39-year-old submitted to a Alco-Sensor test which registered his blood alcohol content as .130 - the legal limit is .08.

Tovalin was charged with DUI, DUI child endangerment and public indecency. His daughter went with security.

Man says co-worker hit him with shovel

BERKLEY LAKE - A 36-year-old Athens man was allegedly hit on the head with a shovel by a fellow co-worker.

A police report said the man got into an argument with fellow construction worker Adan Vasques, 20, of Fairburn who allegedly struck the 36-year-old with the digging tool.

A warrant was taken out for Vasques' arrest on assault charges.
