DULUTH

WYNN, LYDIA

Lydia Strickland Wynn, known as Pat or Patsy to her friends and family, died April 17, 2007 after a brief but ferocious battle against lung cancer. Born May 29, 1919 in Duluth, Georgia, she was the second child of Lydia and Commander Glenn Strickland, as well as the granddaughter of Alice Harrell Strickland, the first woman mayor of Duluth and the state of Georgia. Pat received a BS in dietetics from Georgia State Women's College at Milledgeville. After graduation, she worked at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. as a clinical dietitian. It is there that she met First Lieutenant Ed Wynn whom she later married. Together, they had two daughters. Pat was a passionate Mom encouraging her children to love the arts, think differently and independently, and to be compassionate. She was a constant friend. She loved games, taught them to her children and her grandchildren, particularly bridge and backgammon in which she excelled. She was well read and well traveled. Although nearly deaf in later life, she was a fiercely independent lady. She is survived by her daughter Patty and son-in-law Ken, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, her sister Alice, many nieces and nephews and her good friend Donna Rice. Although without a doubt sometimes a tortured soul, my Mom met death with grace, poise and dignity, attributes by which she tried to live. We love and miss her very much. She will be laid to rest in the family plot in Duluth, Georgia. Bill Head Funeral Homes and Crematory Duluth Chapel, 770-476-2535.
