Man's body found in Jeep behind department store

DULUTH - A Kohl's department store employee made a startling discovery Tuesday morning in the parking area behind the store located at 2050 W. Liddell Road.

Police said the employee, whose name was not released, discovered a newer model, dark-colored Jeep Laredo with the body of a man inside.

"Investigators are not releasing specifics, but the cause of death was not natural," said Gwinnett County Police Department spokesman Cpl. Darren Moloney.

Moloney said police are unsure how the man ended up inside the car behind Kohl's, but the incident is being investigated as a homicide.

"This is not a common area for customers to park," said Moloney. "There's no indication that the man was an employee of the store."

The body has been identified but his name will not be released until his family is notified, Moloney said.

"Right now, investigators are tracking down his family using the information we found and waiting for results from the medical examiner to tell us the cause of death," Moloney said.

Police described him as a 39-year-old black man who was found with a New Jersey driver's license. Moloney said the Jeep he was found in displayed a Georgia license plate.

A Kohl's manager referred the Daily Post to the store's corporate offices.

Courtney K. Rogaczewski, a Kohl's spokeswoman, said the store is cooperating with the authorities leading the investigation.

She would not answer specific questions concerning the incident. Rogaczewski said all questions should be referred to police.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Police Department at 770-513-5300.
