Bond set for students accused in drug sting

WINDER - Magistrate Ed Brock on Tuesday set bond for eight Winder-Barrow High School students arrested Monday and accused of possessing or selling drugs on school property.

Monday's raid at WBHS was the result of a six-month undercover sting operation at the school. The Winder Police Department placed a 20-year-old undercover agent as a student in the high school after complaints from parents and WBHS Principal Rob Johnson. The agent purchased marijuana, methadone, Lortab, Soma, Xanax, Vicodin, Percocet and cocaine in 26 separate transactions during his six-month term, leading to the students' arrests.

Three students, Christopher Barnette, David DeRoche and Justin Mayweather, had bonded out at press time.

Steve Hayes with the Department of Juvenile Justice released no information on the fate of the three juveniles, ages 15 and 16, arrested Monday. Juveniles normally face a detention hearing and are either released into the custody of their parent or guardian or forwarded to the Youth Detention Center in Gainesville, according to Lt. Todd Druse, Winder Police Department spokesman.

The juveniles are not being held in the Barrow County Detention Center.

Formal charges against each student were released by Barrow County's magistrate court officials Tuesday.

Barnette, 17, was charged with selling marijuana. He was released on $5,000 bond.

Roderick Billings, 18, was charged with two counts of selling marijuana and two counts of possession or distribution of a controlled substance on or near school property. He is being held under $20,000 bond.
