Board to vote on school names, curriculum change

SUWANEE - Gwinnett County Board of Education members will vote Thursday evening on the names for three schools opening in 2008 and nine schools opening in 2009.

Gwinnett County Public Schools Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks will present his recommendations to the board during its monthly meeting that evening.

Naming committees created lists of suggested school names, which could include individuals who have made significant social contributions, names of communities served by the schools, roads, landmarks and geographical locations. The school system sought public input in the naming process last month.

The schools to be named are as follows:

•Grayson cluster elementary school, 841 Cooper Road, Grayson

•Mill Creek cluster elementary school, 2442 S. Pucketts Mill Road, Dacula

•South Gwinnett cluster elementary school, 4151 Rosebud Road, Loganville

•Lanier cluster elementary school, 6442 Suwanee Dam Road, Buford

•North Gwinnett cluster middle school, 160 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, Sugar Hill

•Grayson/Dacula relief cluster high school, 2255 New Hope Road, Lawrenceville

•Mill Creek/Collins Hill/Dacula relief cluster high school, 2351 Sunny Hill Road, Lawrenceville

•Mill Creek/Collins Hill/Dacula relief cluster middle school, 2240 Braselton Highway, Buford

•Grayson cluster middle school, 1777 Grayson Highway, Grayson

•Grayson cluster middle school, 821 Cooper Road, Grayson

•Mill Creek/Collins Hill/Dacula relief cluster elementary school, 2020 Buford Drive, Lawrenceville

•Grayson cluster elementary school, 1725 Grayson Highway, Grayson.

The board will also be asked to approve the recommendations of the Gwinnett Educational Management System Oversight Committee, which meets each year to review and suggest changes to the district's Academic Knowledge and Skills curriculum.

The suggested revisions will be presented Thursday afternoon during the board's monthly work session.

Community members can address the board at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. A sign-up sheet is provided that evening.
