WINDER - Fire destroyed a townhouse at 168 Turtle Creek on Wednesday and damaged the roof on another. The fire started at 12:43 a.m. and appeared suspicious, Winder Fire Chief Raymond Mattison said.
"There was no power, no gas hooked up, there was no reason for the fire to start," Mattison said. The townhouses were under construction and about 90 percent completed, according to Mattison. Max Volk of Twin Oaks Construction Company owns the units. No injuries or fatalities resulted from the fire. Winder has had one or two suspicious fires this year, according to Mattison. Barrow County has seen more than 60 fires since the beginning of the year, many of them of unknown or suspicious origin, according to Lt. Scott Dakin, spokesman for the Barrow County Fire and Emergency Services. On March 29, Barrow County firefighters discovered the partially burned body of Kenneth Mohard, 38, of Flowery Branch, near a suspicious grass fire on Tucker Road, after fighting three other fires in the area the previous night.More like this story
