Jackson EMC gives $15,000 to Habitat

WINDER - A $15,000 grant from the Jackson EMC Foundation will pay for a septic system, plumbing, electrical and HVAC system for a home the Barrow County Habitat for Humanity is constructing for a single mother with two autistic children.

In addition to building two homes this year, Barrow County Habitat for Humanity also plans to convert a duplex to a single-family home and provide repairs to 22 homes to make them safe, energy efficient and stop further decay.

Participating members of Jackson EMC fund the Foundation's work through Operation Round Up, which rounds up monthly electric bills to the next dollar amount. Ninety percent of the cooperative's members participate in the effort, contributing an average of $6 a year. Funds are administered by a volunteer board of directors, which reviews applications and make grant awards.

To date, the members' Foundation has distributed nearly $757,400 in assistance to 68 charitable organizations and 19 individuals in need.
