$18,000 raised for animal clinic

LAWRENCEVILLE - The Gwinnett Sheriff's Department raised more than $18,000 for an animal clinic.

The sheriff's department raised more than $18,000 Wednesday to assist the Society of Humane Friends in opening a low cost spay/neuter program for all Gwinnett

residents.

The Society of Humane Friends had been donated land and building space for $1 a year, but still needed $10,000 for equipment and supplies, as well as additional money to initially provide staffing.

Groups team up for service project

NORCROSS - The Kawneer Norcross group partnered with Rebuilding Together and Hands on Atlanta to finish their first service project for the month of service.

Members of the group volunteered to help an Atlanta-area senior citizen with home improvements such as refurbishing window panes and reconstructing a wheelchair ramp.

'To Grandmother's House' begins

WINDER - Winder-Barrow Community Theatre will present "To Grandmother's House We Go" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 3 p.m. Nov. 5

Advance price tickets are only available until the show opens. To get tickets in advance, pick them up at State Farm Insurance at 41 S. Center St. in Winder. Call Pam Veader at 770-867-1679 for details. The show will be at the Barrow County Leisure Services Center on Second Street in Winder.

The Barrow County Food Pantry is the sponsored nonprofit group for this show. All audience members are asked to bring canned food for the food pantry, but on Thursday night, a bag of canned or boxed food will be accepted for half the ticket price.

This play is a drama and is designed for older teens and adults. It is not recommended for younger children because of strong emotions and some language.

Family Connection conducting survey

WINDER - Barrow County Family Connection is conducting a community assessment survey.

Surveys can be accessed at www.gafcp.org/fcnetwork/barrow. They can be returned to the Chamber of Commerce of Family Connection.

The survey is intended to help the organization with its three-year planning process. Surveys are due the first week in November.

WIMO 1300AM gets new GM

BETHLEHEM - WIMO has a new general manager.

Jon Graham has been promoted to general manager of the radio station, NewsTalk 1300AM, after serving as its director of operations since October 2005.

Gwinnett projects tie for top award

LAWRENCEVILLE - Two Gwinnett projects tied for first place in a nationwide competition that measures how well construction projects are managed.

Both projects are by the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources and were honored at the Construction Management Association of America annual conference last week.

The 75-million-gallons-per-day Shoal Creek Filter Plant and the 40 million-gallons-per-day F. Wayne Hill Water Resources Center expansion both won the 2006 CMAA National Project Achievement Award in the over $100 million category. Gwinnett County's Mike Kilgore and Adam Minchey, who each managed one of these projects, received the awards at the CMAA annual conference in Tampa

BBA to usher in holiday season

BRASELTON - Members of the Braselton Business Association will usher in the holiday season with "An Old Fashioned Christmas" festival in early November.

The traditional festival of trees will be presented Wednesday through Nov. 18 inside the Braselton Antique Mall on the corner of Ga. Highways 53 and 124 downtown. The free festival features trees decorated by individuals, civic groups and schools in vibrant period decor. After the competition for grand prizes, the trees will be for sale.

On Saturday, the festival presents crafts and food vendors at the Antique Mall beginning at 9 a.m. The annual Christmas parade will be held on Ga. Highway 53 at

4:30 p.m. followed by the traditional lighting of the town's tree at 5:30 p.m. hosted by the Braselton Rotary Club.

"The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" will be presented in the Braselton Park at 6:30 p.m. The movie in the park is co-hosted by the Braselton Lions Club.
