Police ID teens killed in accident

SUWANEE - Police have identified the three teens killed in a Thursday afternoon motor vehicle collision in Suwanee.

The incident occurred around 3:40 p.m. at the intersection of Lawrenceville-Suwanee and Smithtown Roads.

Daniel Lei, 17, of Suwanee, who was driving east on Lawrenceville-Suwanee, attempted to turn left at the intersection and collided with a 2004 Sterling Acterra LT950 (truck) traveling west through the intersection, said Cpl. Darren Moloney, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.

The incident resulted in the deaths of Lei and his two passengers, Daniel Lee, 18, and Ji Cha, 17, both of Suwanee.

Everyone involved was wearing a seat belt, Moloney said.

According to witnesses, the traffic light for both vehicles turned from green to yellow.

Moloney said Lei was listed at fault for failure to yield while turning left.

Lee and Lei were both seniors at North Gwinnett High School, and Cha was a sophomore at Peachtree Ridge High School.

The driver of the truck, Jeremy Sherrer, 27, of Monroe, is cooperating with investigators, Moloney said.

Moloney said the incident is still under investigation.

Ted Bailey, Chief Forensic Investigator with Office of the Medical Examiner in Gwinnett County, said there have been 74 fatalities in 2006 as of Friday afternoon.

Seventeen of those killed were between the ages of 13 and 19, including the deaths of the three teenagers.

In 2005, there were 14 between the ages of 13 and 19 killed out of a total of 86 deaths in motor vehicle accidents, Bailey said.

There were 90 fatalities in 2004, just four more than in 2005, Bailey said.
