LILBURN - A Duluth man was run over by his own vehicle Thursday night while trying to stop the van from moving.
Police say Jarol Osmar Gomez, 41, was standing outside his 2000 Dodge Caravan parked along Reeder Lane around 9:30 p.m. when it started moving.
Gomez's 4-year-old son got out of his car seat and shifted the van out of park, and the vehicle started moving, said Cpl. Darren Moloney, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.
Gomez attempted to stop the vehicle with his body and was run over, Moloney said.
The van came to a stop at 4439 Reeder Lane, but it is unknown how far Gomez was dragged, Moloney said.
He was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he later died, Moloney said.
The incident occurred within the city limits of Lilburn, but Lilburn police turned the cased over to the county, said Sgt. Tyler Thomas, spokesman for the Lilburn Police Department.
"It was decided by Lilburn supervisors to contact Gwinnett's accident investigation unit and request that they work the case," Thomas said.
Moloney said no charges are pending.
Ted Bailey, Chief Forensic Investigator with Office of the Medical Examiner in Gwinnett County, said Gomez's death brings the number of vehicle-related fatalities to 74 this year as of Friday afternoon.
