NORCROSS - Gwinnett County police are continuing the investigation into what caused a mother to crash her vehicle into the center median of Interstate 85.
Sheila Smith, 43, and her 21-year-old daughter, Dana Smith, were traveling northbound on the interstate just south of Indian Trail Road around 1 a.m. Wednesday when they wrecked. The duo from North Carolina were thrown from the vehicle and the daughter was pronounced dead at the scene. The mother was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center and is in serious condition. Officer Darren Moloney, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department, confirmed neither passenger was wearing a seat belt. Moloney was unable to say if whether wearing seat belts would have made a difference in the outcome of the accident. "We can't say yes, about survival, that's a medical question," he said "Of course we always, always recommend wearing seat belts." The Accident Investigation Unit of the Gwinnett County Police Department is still investigating the accident and believe alcohol may have contributed to the crash. "Blood tests must be run, and the condition of the vehicle must still be evaluated to determine the cause," Moloney said.More like this story
