Mother may face charges in son's death

NORCROSS - A 2-year-old Norcross boy died Sunday evening after he fell out of the pickup truck his mother was driving and was struck by the car his father was driving.

The toddler, Kevin Alexander Juarez, was standing on the floorboard of the passenger side of the 2006 Ford F-150 his mother was driving, said Cpl. Darren Moloney, the Gwinnett County police spokesman.

The mother, 26-year-old Zurma Alvarez Juarez, was driving eastbound on Indian Trail-Lilburn Road. As the Ford turned left onto Willow Trail Parkway, Kevin "manipulated the door handle, opening the door and falling out onto the pavement," Moloney said.

Quelvin A. Juarez, 26, was following his wife in a 1992 Toyota Corolla and struck the boy at about 8:40 p.m., Moloney said.

Kevin died at the scene, Moloney said.

Zurma Alvarez Juarez could face charges in the incident, Moloney said.

The couple's 1-year-old son was also riding with Zurma Alvarez Juarez. The baby was in the backseat in an unsecured infant seat, Moloney said.

The Gwinnett County Police Department's Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the incident.
