Gwinnett festival will raise money for pug rescue group

If you're a sucker for cute dogs in costume, you won't want to miss this weekend's Pugfest.

Southeast Pug Rescue and Adoption will hold Pugfest, its biggest fundraiser of the year, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds, 2405 Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville. The cost is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children under 12. The festival will feature a pug parade, a costume contest and "best of" contests. Fundraisers include a silent auction, bake sale, raffles, professional pet pictures and pet grooming.

Cancer Crusaders' Ball set for Nov. 4

The 32nd annual Crusaders' Ball Against Breast Cancer, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, will be held Nov. 4 at Gwinnett Place Marriott in Duluth.

This year's theme is New York, New York, and the event will include games, magic tricks, silent and live auctions and dancing. This year's goal is to raise $225,000 for cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services. Over the past three decades, the Crusaders' Ball has raised more than $6 million for cancer research, said American Cancer Society area director Randy Redner.

Credit union holding Relay fundraiser

Through the end of October, Gwinnett Federal Credit Union is raising money for its Relay for Life team with a Pink Basket Raffle.

The bags include a badminton set, a golf towel, golf balls, soap, a breast cancer pin and lots more. Money raised from the raffle tickets sold at each branch will go toward the team, and the drawing will be held Oct. 30. For more information, visit www.gwinnettfcu.org.

Walk/run will raise money for animals

The second annual Atlanta Walk/Run for Animals & Expo will be held Saturday at Grant Park in Atlanta. Proceeds will provide assistance for indigent animals with life-threatening medical needs. For more information, visit www.atlanta-walk4animals.com.

Hands on Atlanta Day another success

Hands on Atlanta Day, held Oct. 7 at locations across the city, drew more than 15,000 volunteers at 200 service projects.

All told, volunteers contributed about 60,000 hours of service at metro area nonprofit agencies and organizations. Projects included renovating, landscaping, cleaning up schools, building playgrounds, sorting goods at food banks, helping at pet shelters and more.

Hands on Atlanta, an affiliate of the national Hands On Network, specializes in matching people with volunteer opportunities at more than 400 service organizations and schools all year long.

Bowen's Healing House raises $320K

Bowen Family Homes raised $320,000 for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and the Shepherd Center through its recent Healing House raffle. The company sold 3,225 tickets at $100 each to raise money for the two nonprofit groups. A Maryland man bought two tickets to win the new, furnished house in Lawrenceville.

The Shepherd Center is an Atlanta-based catastrophic care hospital and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta operates three hospitals and offers more than 30 pediatric specialties. For more information, visit www.bowenfamilyhomes.com.

Norcross day care holds Trike-A-Thon

The Sunshine House Day Care in Norcross recently raised $400 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital during its third annual Trike-A-Thon. About 80 children, ages 3 to 5, participated in the fundraiser in the school's parking lot. During the week before the riding event, the children learned about bicycle safety.

Belk's charity shopping event set for Friday-Saturday

Belk department store will hold its Belk Charity Days event on Friday and Saturday. Shoppers who donate $5 to their favorite participating local charity or nonprofit group will get a 20 percent discount on Belk's regular and sale merchandise.
