Man arrested in restaurant slaying

LAWRENCEVILLE - Police have arrested a man in connection with a Saturday morning shooting that resulted in the death of a 25-year-old.

Carlos Saravia-Espinal, 22, of Norcross was arrested late Monday night at an undisclosed location in connection with the shooting death of Jose Mucino-Montez.

Saravia-Espinal is charged with murder, felony murder and aggravated assault, said Cpl. Darren Moloney, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Moloney said the incident occurred about 9:30 a.m. at Las Tortas Locas restaurant in Norcross.

Witnesses on Saturday said the incident began with an altercation about the way the victim was looking at Saravia-Espinal's girlfriend.

Police say the altercation then escalated into the suspect shooting the victim in the stomach area.

According to the police report, an officer on the scene found the victim's body with a single entry wound near his belly button.

"The wound was not bleeding badly if at all save for a little blood around the wound," the officer wrote in the report. "There was no longer any blood coming out of it. I did not see an exit wound, and there was no blood visible in the area around him."

Moloney said investigators were working the case most of the night before making the arrest.

"Specialized units such as SWAT and the Special Investigation Section assisted the Homicide Squad in making this arrest," Moloney said in a press release.

Witnesses also said the suspect fled with his girlfriend after the shooting, but no information about her has been released by police.
