SUWANEE - Collins Hill defeated Norcross 25-23, 25-18 and then beat Mill Creek in a very close match 25-23, 15-25, 25-20 in the Area 7-AAAAA volleyball tournament on Saturday at North Gwinnett High School.
Mill Creek battled back to beat Norcross for a rematch in the finals with Collins Hill. The Eagles will host the championship match at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Alex Olney paced Collins Hill with 14 kills while Chelsea Proffitt and Morgan Wimmer each contributed nine kills. Proffitt also had 12 digs. Kelsey Proffitt, the Eagles' setter, added eight kills to her 34 assists. Jennifer Daniels had six aces on the day and Collins Hill improved to 22-19.
Mill Creek defeated Peachtree Ridge 25-16, 25-14 to open the tournament, then fell to Collins Hill before rebounding to beat Norcross 20-25, 25-18, 25-22.
Olivia Day and Kelley Samples had 25 kills each for the Hawks (29-8). Ashley Vaughn had 52 assists and five aces while Emili Clayton added 59 digs.
Norcross finished third in the area and earned the school's first state tournament berth with a marathon day of matches.
After falling to Collins Hill, the Blue Devils defeated North Gwinnett (25-12, 25-8) and Peachtree Ridge (25-17, 25-8). That was followed by the loss to Mill Creek.
August Rhea had four aces, 21 kills and 17 digs for Norcross (34-12). Hannah Nelson totaled eight aces, 21 kills, 14 digs and three blocks. Sophomore Tiffany Clarke pounded out 32 kills and made four blocks. Ainsley Hatten finished the day with six aces, 14 kills and 15 digs while setter Katie Dahl added four aces and had 35 assists.
Wesleyan advances in area tourney
DECATUR - Wesleyan's two-time defending Class AA state champion volleyball team stayed in the Area 4 tournament winner's bracket with victories over Avondale (25-6, 25-12) and Providence Christian (25-6, 25-15) on Saturday in Decatur.
Anne Marie Armstrong led the 40-16 Wolves with 12 kills and 14 aces. Haley Collins contributed nine kills and eight aces to the winning cause. Betsy Smith hammered down 13 kills and Caiti Troyer added 25 assists to a school-record total that exceeds 3,000 for her career.
Wesleyan will play Decatur on Tuesday and the winner of that gets a spot in the area finals.
GAC rallies after loss to earn state berth
DECATUR - Greater Atlanta Christian rallied from a loss to Decatur to beat Buford in the Area 4-AA tournament and secured a state playoff berth on Saturday.
The Spartans opened the day with a 25-7, 25-12 thumping of Hebron Christian before narrowly falling to Decatur 25-23, 26-24. But GAC bounced back to beat county rival Buford 25-13, 25-17 and will play Providence on Tuesday with a spot in the state tournament already guaranteed.
D'Nay Daniels had a team-high 16 kills and five blocks. Ashley Agin added eight kills and 10 aces while Katie Rowell was good for seven kills.
Alex Shelton had six kills and 28 assists for the Spartans (36-8).
