Woman reports home intrusion
•NORCROSS - A 24-year-old Norcross woman told police a man came into her Edward Street home Saturday, tied her up and stole money from her purse.
The woman said a short, heavyset, bearded Hispanic man came into her room at about 10:15 a.m., put a hand over her mouth and told her not to move, a Gwinnett County police report states. The man scratched the woman's nose with his fingernail and used a bed sheet to tie up her hands and feet.
The man then emptied the woman's purse and took $116 and a cellular telephone, according to the report.
Fire destroys Buford home
•BUFORD - A Monday morning fire that destroyed a split-level house has displaced seven people, who all escaped the blaze uninjured, according to the Gwinnett County Fire Department.
The fire department was dispatched to the fire at 5:58 a.m. When they arrived, flames had engulfed more than half of the house, said Lt. Thomas Rutledge, a fire department spokesman.
Firefighters fought the fire from the outside using multiple hand lines and an aerial ladder pipe, and they had the blaze under control at 6:40 a.m., Rutledge said. The fire appears to have started accidentally, Rutledge said.
Man charged with racing car
•SUWANEE - A 21-year-old Gainesville man was arrested and charged with allegedly racing his car on Northbrook Parkway.
An officer was checking the area, a known racing hot spot, when he heard a car laying drags and then observed a souped-up Honda Civic pass by at about 85 mph. The officer pulled behind the Civic and turned on flashing blue lights, but the car continued and turned right onto Old Peachtree Road.
The officer spotted the car in the parking lot of a QuikTrip police report stated. He found the suspect, James Keenan Cole, hiding in a bathroom stall.
Cole was charged with reckless driving and speeding.
