ATLANTA - Lisa Melinda Lyle, 39, of Winder, was sentenced Tuesday to two years, six months in federal prison and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and $74,419 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.
Lyle pleaded guilty to six counts of making false claims against the United States by filing false tax returns and four counts of using other people's names and Social Security numbers to make false claims.
Lyle filed federal tax returns online for tax years 1999 through 2001 in her own name and the names of family members and acquaintances. Those returns contained false information regarding employment and earnings using fraudulent W-2s.
Some of the family members and acquaintances told officials they knew Lyle had filed tax returns using their name and information. The refund checks were mailed to their addresses, and the checks were turned over to Lyle. Others interviewed said they had no idea Lyle had filed tax returns under their names and Social Security numbers.
Special agents with the Department of Treasury are still investigating the case searching for the possibility of more victims.
